Development and Housing Directorate – We are seeking a suitably qualified and highly motivated Building Control Professional in the role of a Principal Building Inspector with the experience and skills that can make an immediate impact. As a Principal Building Surveyor, you will be responsible for assessing plans for compliance with Building Regulations using your detailed knowledge of the Approved Documents and associated British Standards.

You will also be required to conduct site visits to inspect building works under construction and provide advice to construction professionals, building owners and members of the public. As part of this you will investigate and qualify acceptable solutions and keep accurate records to support decision making. You will also be confident in assessing and instructing action to remedy dangerous buildings and structures and be conversant with the enforcement powers outlined in the Building Act 1984 (as amended).

To be successful for the Principal Building Inspector vacancy, you must have a relevant qualification, such as a degree qualification or similar in a subject such as Building Surveying or Building Control and a sound and comprehensive knowledge of Building Regulations and the building process. Membership of a relevant professional body such as the RICS, CABE or CIOB is desirable.

You will be required to have a detailed understanding of the emerging role and influence of the Building Safety Regulator and Building Safety Act 2022 upon the future operation of Building Control. You will need to evidence your ability to register with the Building Safety Regulator as a Class 3 Building Inspector for both plan assessment and site inspection up to Category H. Applicants will need to have already satisfied, or be in the process of undertaking, a competency validation with one of the three accepted providers (The Building Safety Competence Foundation / The Chartered Association of Building Engineers BICAS or the Total Training BCCA). The Council will fund the costs associated with individual registration with the Building Safety Regulator and the annual maintenance charge.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential as you will be liaising with members of the public and building relationships with architects and builders. You must be IT literate and possess a full driving licence. Access to a vehicle is essential.

This post attracts a reviewable market supplement, and our policy is attached.
