Environment and Property Directorate. Based at Loco Shed Wallend Road and Riversway Control Centre
An exciting opportunity has arisen to be a key member of the small team that manages the operation and maintenance of our considerable infrastructure at the former docklands estate at Riversway.
The Senior Riversway Operative will co-ordinate and supervise the work of others but this is very much a hands-on role. Day to day duties will partly involve working out of doors on the maintenance and repair of mechanical and static equipment, structures and facilities on land around the former dock estate, as well as maintenance of the dock water areas and navigation marks in the Ribble estuary to around 14 miles from the dock entrance. Working from boats is therefore a key and integral part of the duties expected.
A second major aspect of the duties expected is the requirement to work, on a rota basis, in manning our tidal operations as “Lockmaster”, working at the Riversway Control Centre. This involves liaison and supervision of mariners entering and leaving the dock complex at times of high water and facilitating their movement by operation of the lock gates and swing road/rail bridge. Clearly then, there is a high degree of responsibility for operating very substantial equipment of high capital value and the ability to assimilate training in this task is paramount.
In this senior role, there will be the requirement to maintain records and undertake various administrative tasks. You will therefore have a good standard of general education and a proven ability to assimilate training of a technical and practical nature.
The nature of the duties described includes elements where, of necessity, the times of work are dictated by tide. There is therefore requirement both to work flexibly and, when on rosta, to a shift which is determined by the time of high water of the daylight tide.
The successful applicant must have the ability to motivate and lead a small team as well has having the ability to work independently and unsupervised.
Full time Post – 37 hours, commencing 7.45am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Tidal working on rota is expected, mainly between 1st April and 30th September for which a weekend enhancement is paid. Some tidal working with notice is expected outside of season.
As an employer we like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of employee benefits including flexi time, a minimum of 30 days’ annual leave (plus Bank Holidays), family friendly policies, access to an Employee Assistance Programme, Local Government Pension Scheme, AVC’s, life assurance scheme, payment of professional fees, discounted parking, cycle to work scheme and discounted bus and rail fares.
